I know I would not resist the challenging journey I was about to endure. A trip to Canggu these days is not complete without a stop to this beaute. Ladies and gentlemen, follow my steps and you’ll not regret. Make that stop whenever you’re nearby. It’s Monsieur [meu-ssi-eu] Spoon!
One step inside the shop, you’ll smell the aroma of up-to-the-minute baked croissants. Buoying pastry selection and delicately presented cakes wave hello as you walk further in. Think about Madeleine, kouign amann, and warm brioche. The shop is not that big, it barely fits 10 people. But their Canggu outlet is definitely convenient for 20-30 customers altogether, seated at their mostly outdoor space.
Do try: Chocolate Lava Cake (Rp 39k). One might expect lava cake to ooze chocolate filling when it cracked open, but not with theirs apparently. To make up for it, the cake itself is very moist inside. The marmalade cuts on top bring that kicking sensation just nice.
Sit, unwind (mind you the outdoor space is comfy you can sit there for hours) and come back in the shop to order more. At least that’s what I opted for. I’m not too fussy about macaroons (each from Rp 14k), but when they’re good, they’re GOOD. Now these ones are almost good *grin face*
If you can fit in more slices of something moreish, then Royal Spoon (Rp 39k, pictured above) is the perfect choice. A thin crust of crispy hazelnut feuilletine covered by a generous layer of intense dark chocolate (64% cocoa), dacquoise biscuit base, glazed with fine Belgian chocolate. Sounds good already? Wait until it melts in your mouth.
Ahhh I love Canggu more and more. And there is always a reason to come back. Next visit, tag me along and we’ll share a kouign amman (and Royal Spoon…and Lava Cake…and madeleine) over coffee, perhaps?
